WHO plan to fight bird flu pandemic

Telegraph UK

"...the mass administration of antiviral drugs must begin within 21 days after the detection of the first case [of] improved human-to-human transmission of the virus." A bird flu.pandemic "could sicken 20 per cent of the global population and put 30 million people in hospital, of whom around 20 per cent could die. ... the WHO agreed that this were a potential pandemic, a range of logistical measures and tests would be carried out along with control measures, notably the use of antivirals, quarantine and hygiene measures."

I don't know who does the math; maybe Arthur Andersen, but at the current rate, if it hits 2 billion people, it will kill a billion.

Intelligent Designer almighty still impressed by burnt offerings after inflicting punishment for sins that only certain special "Sages" are given the power to identify for the rest of us instead of, say, sky writing. What's Madonna going to do if Kabbalah wipes out the rest of her fans? My own numerology says it's not gay marriage but estate taxes and environmental regulations that have brought the Scourge of Intelligent Design down upon His stiff-necked people.

NutraSweet is an excitoneurotoxic carcinogen

Migratory birds did not spread virus

PittsburghLIVE

"Researchers concede that the global poultry trade, much of which is illicit, plays a far larger role in spreading the virus [than migratory birds]. The Nigerian government traced its outbreak to the illegal importation of day-old chicks. Illegal trading in fighting cocks brought the virus from Thailand to Malaysia in fall 2005. And it is probable that H5N1 first spread from Qinghai to Russia and Kazakhstan last summer through the sale of contaminated poultry. But an increasingly hysterical world targets migratory birds."

UK, US to withdraw Iraq forces by early '07

Reuters

A bit early for April Fools. Here is a choice specimen of the recent brand of $2 propaganda. Reuters is quoting two UK Sunday papers who are quoting unnamed military sources. One is the Daily Mirror. You remember them: the political science journal investigating the American stupidity epidemic after the '04 elections. The paraphrase reads: "Britain's Sunday Mirror newspaper also reported on the planned withdrawal saying it would happen within 12 months." As a complete quote, owing to a quirk of the subjunctive case in English, it means that they said it will happen. Out of context, it means the conditional i.e. it would happen if some stated condition. I guess you can look it up, but even if they said this rather than that, it's still only unnamed senior defense ministry sources. Major Paul Swiergosz of the Pentagon, on the other hand (can't call him unnamed; unfortunately maybe), says in plainer English in the fifth paragraph that, ""We've made no such plans." Reuters is, of course, merely reporting what the newspapers said, and not what is so, though wishful thinking on a Saturday might lead people to leap to the conclusion that troops will be withdrawn ever. After all, the two governments have accepted that "the presence of foreign troops in Iraq was now a large obstacle to securing peace." As the standard method of securing war, it's probably not ideal, but now that the greatest imperialists in history have accepted that, it could hardly be more than a few months before they get the electricity running to the boot camp where the 230,000 Iraqis are learning to fly American helicopters and drive aircraft carriers. Have they improved their method of interviewing generals, or are they going to use contractors? I guess we'll leave that to the unnamed serior defense ministry. Good thing they're not going to draft anybody. They could hardly reinstate the draft for such a criminal war. Reuters does state, however that "however, the Telegraph, quoting a defense official, said that if civil war were to break out, [however] it would likely cause the withdrawal plan to be put off."
