Considerations On Recent Terrorist Actions: ust a few weeks ago many Australians saw a TV interview with a somewhat gruff US Ambassador to OZ who, seemingly upset with the prevalent (majority) popular objection of Australian citizens to Australia's involvement in the planned US military invasion of Iraq (or "Regime Change" as it has become known in extant "Poli-Speak"), warned us that Australia was not immune to Al Qaeda style terrorist action. Crazy as it seems at first sight many who saw this interview gleaned his attitude to actually be an unspoken but implied threat of terrorist action if we did not mend our wayward non-compliant attitudes. The NO side won and Germany came down solidly against any involvement in, or UN support for, the planned US-Iraq war. Similarly France held out against the USA and, although willing to support renewed UN site investigations, refused to back the US demand for stronger UN resolutions that would automatically lead via a short fuse to a rapid UN supported war on Iraq. Reportedly the vast majority of other European populations are also dead set against this new US war. Not only these peoples but also a very large percentage of Britons are similarly dis-interested in this new American game - with it's very real risk of devolution into World War III. Then within a few days we were presented with fresh Al Jazeera TV announcements (a) that Osama bin Laden (aka they seek him here - they seek him there - the elusive pimpernel) was alive and well, and (2) a message - reportedly from another Al Qaeda Chief - threatening terrorist attacks against both French and German interests. These news items were immediately followed by a terrorist attack - an explosive laden motor boat against a French Super-Tanker off the coast of Yemen. Back in OZ we simultaneously experienced nation wide TV warnings by one Rohan Gunaratna, the author of "Inside Al Qaeda". This previously unknown to us "expert on terrorism" issued a specific warning that Al Qaeda members have been trained to destroy targets in Australia, stating that he'd been given the information during debriefings of captured Al Qaeda members. McCain said senior members of the House and Senate intelligence committees had a written agreement approving the proposal for inclusion in the intelligence authorization bill for this year. But the House Republican leadership weighed in against it and the deal collapsed, he said. It is no secret that "the White House works through the House Republican leadership," McCain said. "Do you really want to allow this commission to be created?'' Lieberman asked the White House. "And if you don't, why not?" White House spokesman Ari Fleischer denied that President Bush is trying to sabotage the proposal. "We are very close to getting an agreement on the 9/11 commission, and the president thinks it can and should be done," McCain described the administration's objections as involving "minutia." Rep. Porter Goss (R-Fla.), chairman of the House intelligence committee, denied he had signed off on the agreement. Even if the details can't be worked out this year, McCain and Lieberman vowed to continue pushing for the commission next year. "It's going to happen," McCain said. The congress who recently gave green light to the Iraq genocide over the unambiguous opposition of their constituencies are now putting on a big show trying to make the absence of investigation into the crimes of last Sept plausible. Once again a republican is given top billing in the investigation and reform of republican practices with a fake democrat there to make it all look bipartisan and ask the tough questions before someone who really wants answers asks them.

US Intelligence - Bali Attack 'Sophisticated': The bombings of a popular nightclub strip in the Indonesian resort island of Bali were conducted by a "sophisticated" terrorist group because of the large amount of high explosives used and the coordination of the attacks, a U.S. intelligence official said on Monday. "We haven't come to any final conclusions, but it's clearly the work of a sophisticated terrorist organization of which there are only a few, there are some in that region that are associated with al Qaeda like JI (Jemaah Islamiah)." U.S. intelligence agencies are also analyzing whether the Bali bombings were linked in some way to recent shooting deaths of U.S. Marines in Kuwait and an explosion at a French tanker off the coast of Yemen. The speculation was that they could all be the work of independent terror cells responding to a call by al Qaeda leaders for increased action, officials said. Qatar's al Jazeera television has recently broadcast audiotapes of Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenant Ayman al-Zawahri, as well as a statement the station said was faxed that carried bin Laden's signature. The messages called on Muslims to conduct war against the United States and Israel. "These are not isolated incidents," Shelby said of the recent attacks in Bali, Kuwait and Yemen. "They are measured, they are planned, they are part of the terrorist attacks, and there will be more," he told Reuters. Like 9/11 and unlike any terrorist activity before, a series of attacks in different parts of the world (including the Wash DC area) go without claims of or with explicit denials of responsibility by the parties accused by the US govt and allies. These attacks continue the atmosphere of terror of the still unsolved and uninvestigated WTC and anthrax attacks of last year. Whatever benefit they are supposed to reap for al Qaeda, they serve to weaken the international resistance to US war plans in Iraq. The Wash DC shootings which bushoicia has just labeled terrorism are similar to the anthrax attacks in that it didn't take long for law enforcement to finger a US military source, but their assumption is a recently discharged sniper team. The sophistication of the Bali bomb also rules out a scraggly group of angry militants, so their assumption is the supersophisticated al quaeda who after all have already been convicted without evidence of the supersophisticated WTC attack. Meanwhile, the supersophisticated al quaeda can't get a video tape out that clearly shows a living bin laden making an unambiguous statement of responsibility and intention that is up to the level of my home movies.
